The visit to Senegal was to attend a workshop to develop an ISO Standard for Sustainable Non-sewered Sanitation, under the leadership of ANSI and the Association Sénégalaise de Normalisation (Senegal National Standards Organisation).

The Janicki Omniprocessor plant in Dakar, Senegal which produced drinking water and electrical energy from shit is an early example of such an innovative system (see photograph).



The Pollution Research Group has received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to upgrade the facilities in the Chemical Engineering Building to enable it to become a reference laboratory for the analysis of faecal sludge. During 2017 eThekwini Water and Sanitation and the Pollution Research Group will host the testing of 4 prototype transformational technologies for faecal sludge processing.
